iir you can accidently reset yourself to earlier steps if you trade wrong item for the wrong steps, but it's been awhile

the variable would get set on cs completion, all that is the logic telling it which cs to play (which doesn't mean that logic is good!)

ultimately the quest will get redone for the interaction system, but for now I'd stamp tested fixes for it.
