Greyed out mostly means that's not the active choice at the moment. Try mousing over Angband>Tiles>Set and then selecting a tile set; other things should work similarly.

OK, for me it looks exactly like your first screenshot, but I can go to one of the tilesets and **even though it's greyed out** select it, and it works.

I think this solution or something like it is a good idea. Ability to 'personalise' messages is important for immersion.

OK, I did not read this properly at first. This seems most likely to be a problem writing to the lore file, potentially due to something going on with angband.live...

Yeah, this is a thing. Debug commands should work with the new version 4+ command system

I'm going to call this an ongoing issue. Debug commands lag behind game changes, currently a loooong way, but probably always a bit.

I think a call to player_inc_check() first is best.

Given Angband uses utf-8, it sounds to me like the idea in your last sentence would be the one to go with. Caveats on that are that I don't know...
