I have the same problem. Before, I was able to use the keyboard backlight, but I am not anymore, after reinstalling catalina.

Interestingly, the SmartMatrix LE seems to use the same ASCII protocol as the Pulse300, just with more features. Perhaps work can continue on this module? I'd be happy to help,...
