Thanks for keeping it in mind. Perhaps the forthcoming WYSIWYG mode in Obsidian will make this sort of thing easier?
I would have thought that this should actually be implemented in the same way as shadows... the sand being a transparent overlay that can be put on top of neighbouring...
Other than aesthetics what will water / lava add to the game? I am sure that there is a reason to include other hazards, but this is precisely the sort...
