Just tested this, and creatures ALWAYS go to make a new Lair if they cannot reach their current one, not just before heeding a Call to Arms.

The Place terrain cheat has an option to display the co-ordinates of the slab the cursor is pointing at.

Using CHANGE_SLAB_TYPE next to water leads to patchy gold

Patchy gold happens with the place terrain cheat too.

Slabs are untagged if enemy digs them out
