In ClojureScript, we use https://github.com/martinklepsch/s3-beam for this purpose, and it lets us upload directly to S3 without going through our application.

I think `trim_final_newlines` or `trim_trailing_newlines` would both be good. "Trailing" seems to be a common term for extraneous whitespace, whereas "final newlines" is a bit more ambiguous.

I’ve found for coarse grained distinctions between dev/prod/test that it is easy to just have three component constructor functions for the different contexts. Just my 5c.
