Switching browsers doesn't help. But there is this oddity I mentioned at the beginning: when I move pegman to a non-streetview spot and half the screen goes grey, the drop-down...

I didn't call it a compass rose because I use the tilt-mechanism in street view, where it lifts up or down rather than north or south to give different views...
