Try adding the formulas in LibreOffice, then save with LibreOffice, then modify the file with Ruby. Does that work?

This is a good question. I think this is not really supported yet. But please go ahead and try to do it and let me know if you come up...

So the file was created with Microsoft Office and saved as XLSX? Then it was saved with Microsoft Office as XLS?

What happens if you save the file to XLS using LibreOffice? Does spreadsheet gem then work?

And _**why**_ was was the file first saved as XLSX and not as XLS?
