if anyone else encounters this, apparently it can be fixed from the Cloud Services tab:  

> Could you move them into a separate file called `qaz-layouts.dtsi` please? should be done, I think the syntax is correct, but I haven't done that in my own config...

everything works in studio, and buttons are mapped as expected.
