Make sure the make command uses 3 cores or less. With 4 cores used, the PI hangs and barely responsive. Also make sure you have 1G of swap

Same behavior also on a PI400. So I don't think it has to do with CPU. WiFi on the RPI 3B failed and it was able to push only ~3Mb/sec....
