accidentally found a semi-workaround... make the Waveform output properties around 1/4 the size I want, then drag/expand the waveform in the scene to 250% ... and then set scale filtering...

Seconding this feature request! :) Maybe have the UI disappear 'x' seconds after it starts recording? Toggleable, of course, because some people won't want this.
