WAL-G passes parameters from config file to env vars automatically. For pgx and for storages. So this should work. AFAIK it passes PGPASSFILE too.
We do not depend on features of pgx much. I think it should be straightforward to upgrade, more or less…

WAL-G for PostgreSQL uses physical backup. It can only backup all databases in cluster. It requires PG connection to call pg_start_backup() at the beginning of backup.
