I was experiencing the same problem but got it to work. I had to downgrade the board from version 2.0.14 to 2.0.11 and recompile. 

I updated from 2.0.11 to 2.0.14 and its not working again. @Marcelverhoeven does downgrading to 2.0.11 work for you? @thelastoutpostworkshop which Board Manager URL are you using? I'm using https://espressif.github.io/arduino-esp32/package_esp32_index.json
