Yeh. This makes sense. It's by far the most frequently asked question here. I wish the defaults were different. Surely you know by now, but just in case use %m+%...
I am actually thinking maybe we should change the defaults in the lubridate 2.0.
it's, sort of, by design as the unit parser was primarily designed for periods. Should be reconsidered for durations, I agree.
What's the problem more concretely. What's the user pattern people have in mind?

I think it's a printer issue. I even reported a bug to R folks a year back. Try as.numeric to see if it's indeed lubridate issue. Precision issues should not...
@BillDunlap is right. There is a subtle issue here. Internal decimal parser, while simple, is problematic due to its multiplicative algorithm. Let me review that code.
