This currently has a bug (in indexedDB/gun?) that means you can't use the chat when offline. Keeping this open to see if it gets resolved in new version of gun.
Less listeners involved this way, but didn't really feel any faster (CPU usage still high on server on initial load). And code is verbose and too complex. Keeping it open...
