callback function once wrapping complete?

That's definitely unexpected, but I'm reluctant to add a callback argument to the API of this function in order to fix it – maybe use a [MutationObserver](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/MutationObserver) instead?

This kind of problem can also be solved by attaching a memoized function to the node using [`d3.local()`](https://github.com/d3/d3-selection#local-variables), is that insufficient?
