Yes this is completely unimplemented. The NEdit text widget was never designed for that. It will be challenging to implement it but I will look into it.
It should work better now on macOS. But I noticed the window title also doesn't show non-ASCII characters correctly.
I like the idea of having a unicode character browser. It would also be good to have some customization options, to save favourites or recently used characters.
