We have the same issue, in our case the issue is most notable on pages that contain iframes (google maps).

Doesn't look that bad to me but I see your point. I'd say that our best option would be reducing the line-height and adding some padding instead.

The star hack won't be a problem with compass since compass [uses](https://github.com/chriseppstein/compass/blob/stable/frameworks/compass/stylesheets/compass/utilities/general/_hacks.scss) that too. But since IE8 supports box-sizing, the fact that the polyfill breaks the layout sounds to me...
