Just for the record, I switched to using Ctrl+Shift+F9 and Ctrl+Shift+F10 for previous/next tab as a workaround.

Couldn't you just write a bash script for launching shin that first gets the active engine, activates the shin engine, and then restores the previous engine after shin exits?

Cool, glad to know that that works at least. And I agree, this workaround shouldn't be necessary. Seems like it might be IBus' fault, not shin's. Unless there's something weird...
