Did you ever track this issue down? I have the same issue. Moving customizeAppearance code to drawRect solved it for me, but seems like there must be a cleaner way...

Completely Agree. There are a lot of devs who need a library like this and are willing to pay for it. Ad supported will never work for most of these...
