Transport class for PHP's `mail()` in Magento Zend Framework is **Zend_Mail_Transport_Sendmail** which [is wrapping](http://framework.zend.com/manual/1.12/en/zend.mail.introduction.html) [PHP's `mail()`](http://php.net/mail). This looks like a way to go.

Which logger is stopping it's work? That's not clear from your report. And what happens if you remove the `config/global/log` entry in proxyblue [`config.xml`](https://github.com/ProxiBlue/NewRelic/blob/master/app/code/community/ProxiBlue/NewRelic/etc/config.xml#L111)?
