How can I use animations?

I am simply trying to play an animation made in the animations tab. I add a keyframe, change position, and then I try to play but nothing happens. I understand how to add a keyframe, but how do I change the position's value at said keyframe? Is there a tutorial somewhere of how I can use this animation tab? I want to make an animation to move an object and use it in a script.
