I figured this out. https://github.com/gabrielfalcao/djangogevent contains a management command runserver which should be used rather than the Django runserver.

Installed from pypi. May be that is the problem.

Installed from github and it works!

@DanHulton Just create a python3 virtualenv and install it inside there
