The `unix://` scheme seems to be well established, I'd recommend doing what you propose.
@xitep, tokio-rs + futures definitely the way to go, had a discussion with the developers and a tokio-rs based kafka client is something they are very interested in seeing.
@bluejekyll, definitely ping @carllerche about this - he's personally interested in a kafka tokio-powered client.
Having regular expression support would be a great win - lots of use-cases that it enables
