I don't have the extra_space mod, but with latest retroarch 1.0 my save states are working beautifully for SNES, NES, Genesis, Master System, and Game Boy.
Neither upgrade affects save games in my experience. Due to updates to the cores some save games from earlier retroarch versions may be incompatible with newer versions.
