I agree that the additional waiting time for the cache to refresh is another factor. I'd love to see benchmarks. :)
Will add logic and a variable to control caching behavior.
I haven't commented on this yet as the commit seems to be clean but the behavior might need some adjustments -- and in this regard I'm working on a per-release...

These SBCL versions are pretty old. I suppose they've fixed this by now. Please reopen if not fixed in a more recent version of SBCL.
