Alright, in that case the Mattel Mindflex carrier board must after all have a little LDO to get down from it's 4V5 to the 3V3-ish required by the daughter board....

Maybe consider using a [Neopixel](https://www.adafruit.com/product/1734) and make it more red for a lower value and more green for a higher value, or some other colours...?
