I think the datasource should not make the request as stated in the docs now (?)
Grafana does not include it in the query. You can definitely send the variable's value within payload.

This is indeed rather incomplete. I'm now stuck with DeserializationGraphNavigator that does not know how to handle unions.
I forgot to mention it does work for single line array shape declaration. It's array shape, widely adopted by php ecosystem https://phpstan.org/writing-php-code/phpdoc-types#array-shapes
