I solved the problem by editing /usr/share/applications/wxHexEditor.desktop. I changed "Exec=wxHexEditor" to "Exec=wxHexEditor %F". BTW: Is there any reason why this is not the default?
Not sure if it's a good idea but I used the test directory from the whitespace remover plugin. It seems to work (after editing some files to replace Whitespace Remover...
