- It's because the image isn't in the "correct" orientation and the exif orientation data is what "fixes" the orientation when you view the images. Browsers don't fix the image...

Modifying the image altogether and [going with a solution like this](https://stackoverflow.com/a/20600801/11279811) is probably best imo. Then you don't have to worry about rotating the image everywhere it's going to be...
