Actually, it only needs a single pause/play control below the slider control (c.f. iPlayer).

This can be handled on your radio (OpenTX, erskyTx, etc.) by using "voice alerts". I don't see any need to duplicate this in the app.

Most radios can do this. Why not just use that?

Rolled back to v1.8.6. I can connect with no problem.

Try running the 6 way calibration again.
