No. An underscore character is taken to mean the beginning of a subscript. I can't make an underscore mean two things at once.

Just for clarity, a variable **can** be defined with a single underscore. That underscore is rendered as the beginning of a subscript. Hurmet variables cannot contain more than one underscore.

I have been unable to reproduce the lack of a space, but I agree with the rest your analysis. Temml ought to do better. I will work on it but...
