Oh, if you're saying that running Mercurial's *current* test suite is a non-goal for you, then rest assured that it's the same for me.

Dram (https://git.sr.ht/~rne/dram) provides a workaround, and I intend to make the prompts configurable. $ printf '$ ugh\n' [$] ugh (glob)

how should Cram deal with multiline values?

i do not think this number should be reported because it does not carry the information you ascribe to it, yet it would be misinterpreted in that and other ways....
