Are releases now limited to F-Droid? Nothing on GitHub anymore? I'm missing 1.27.6.2 here.

Still not fixed. It just creates a shortcut with browser controls. 

The Mastodon web interface also only shows the option to add a shortcut to the homescreen, but Firefox creates a PWA shortcut. It seems that "Install" is basically no longer...

Strange thing. Take a look at my screenshots of the Mastodon web interface. "Install on homescreen" (translated) creates a shortcut that starts Mastodon without browser controls. However, I wouldn't know...

But please in the form of a plugin or completely switchable off. It drives me crazy to have to deal with it in Gboard, Signal, etc. by mistake.
