This is very nice idea and could replace our custom solution. We are already using django-mptt for tree.

I am not sure about it. If we split and you add new elements to html/js or change position etc it will break either way. ..but I can do it...

Is it possible or this project is dead?

That's sad that "official" (http://dev.bitly.com/code_libraries.html) library is dead.
