This seems to work fine on my machine: Arch Linux, rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v9.22 - released: 2016-01-23 options: perl,xft,styles,combining,blink,iso14755,unicode3,encodings=eu+vn+jp+jp-ext+kr+zh+zh-ext,fade,transparent,tint,XIM,frills,selectionscrolling,wheel,slipwheel,cursorBlink,pointerBlank,scrollbars=plain+rxvt+NeXT+xterm What is your system/version/configuration?
This seems to happen randomly with each urxvtd start. Sometimes reload works just fine, sometimes not, sometimes after the unsuccessful attempt the urxvtd stops being able to spawn new clients.
I have been thinking about this for some time and all ways of handling singals seem simply too messy. Perhaps it would be best to use a pipe or socket...
I don't quite understand your scenario. If I run screen in urxvt, I can normally exit or detach it, no problems. Screen should not be interested in what signals urxvt...
