Yeah, short label explanatory tooltip is the way to go.

Just looked `compact` up in a dictionary that translates it to *Festtreten*. Synonyms are *Stampfen* and *Austreten*.

Well in English there is no extra meaning to *compact* either. A wallpaper isn't placed on a wall in the context of computers. We can therefore use a fitting German...
