Could this possibly be due to the socketCAN txqueuelen setting?

Thank you Marcin, I have now managed to program small files successfully... 256 bytes and sometimes 512 bytes.. but that seems to be the max. That is why I thought...

I didn't ever solve this issue... please let me know if you ever manage to resolve it.
