I ran into this problem on a repository that had a de-initialized `submodule`. After running `git submodule init`, JGit (and this plugin) started to return a clean result.

I am running up against this issue as well. And have created https://github.com/palantir/gradle-git-version/pull/103?w=1 If I have 3 subprojects which are versioned independently, I want to ensure my projects keep track...

This change is awaiting testing on OpenShift. The Gremlin agent has already been updated to no longer need these capabilities. Anyone that wishes to launch Gremlin without the required caps...
