Agreed, its seem like a stretch for OpenSSL to address this one.
`make test` runs them. Doing this is recommended.
`make apps/openssl` might be enough.

Why would the TXP need to worry about PING frames? It's seems pretty disconnected from packet assembly. I'm also not convinced that variable length means the TXP is responsible. ACKs...
It's a bit rough around the edges and there are some outstanding questions but I think this is good enough for the moment.
