They may be misusing viewmodels, in that case there's a AndroidViewModel if you need the app context.

Afaik AndroidX preferences libraries [uses RecyclerView](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/support/v7/preference/PreferenceFragmentCompat#getlistview)
