Show Images and Videos results in a grid instead of a list.

Open ZeroCool940711 opened this issue 4 years ago • 7 comments

As the title says it would be nice if the results under the Images and Videos tab were shown in a grid like Bing results instead of a list, it would be easier to see the results and also will look a lot better. Here is an example of what I mean:

Images results in Bing: image

Video results in Bing: image

Hey @mosea3 ,I know this issue is almost a year old but, did you manage to make OpenSemanticSearch show the results on the image and video tab as a grid like Bing?

Oh I forgot. But some days ago I upgraded our 4yo instance to the newest one.

Gonna write back the UI changes. Open to more suggestions

Best regards

Andy

Well, as I said before, it would be nice to make the UI look more like the Bing UI, at least for the Images and Videos results tabs, will think about what else could be improved and let you know later.

ZeroCool940711 avatar Feb 09 '21 20:02 ZeroCool940711

Here is a deep explanation of a few things that could be improved on the UI:

Improvements based on Google and Bing standards:

List tab: 1- Limit the length of the title for each result so they are no more than 50-100 characters. 2- Limit the length of the description for each result to 100-160 characters, 3 - Show the URL for the result under the title so it's easier to know where it will send you. If the full URL is too long, show only the start and end of the URL so the domain, filename and/or extension are shown. 4 - Limit the amount of tags/facets two a line or two or a maximum of 10-20.

These changes mentioned before will make it so that each results is easier to read as it limits the amount of information shown and let you focus better, a "Show More/Show Less" button could be used to show more information on each field if needed, letting you show temporarily extra information.

Images and Video tabs: 1- Show results on a grid like Bing image/video results, as seen on Picture 1 below. The Search bar will be on the top, under it would be the tabs to switch to List, Image, Videos, etc and under it the tags/facets on a single line ro maximum two lines, this will let you use the tags/facets to move around as normal, under it would be the whole grid with the results showing only the thumbnails and no extra information.

Picture 1 Screenshot_2021-02-10 youtube - Bing images(1)

2- When clicking an image/video from the grid mentioned before the image/video is brought to the front and it is maximized so it can be viewed on the same page as shown on Picture 2, Picture 3 shows the same image as Picture 2 but with a few main parts of it marked, at the top the search bar is minimized showing only the icon but still available in case we want to search for something else, next are the tags/facets and a "Restore" and "Exit" button to go back to the grid, both should do the same so with just an exit button would be enough, under that is in the middle the image/video with a "Previous" and "Next" button on each side so its easier to continue browsing the results with the arrow keys on the keyboard, on the right side the top right part showss a small snippet with the image information like title, a button to open the image url in a new tab and the common "Tagging & annotation" as well as the "Preview" button in case they are needed. Under that the rest of the results are shown in a small grid, this could be useful to go thru the results faster and also for clicking the next result instead of using the arrow keys.

3 - An extra and optional feature for videos or gifs would be the ability to play/preview them when the mouse hovers over the results for a few seconds like Bing, YouTube and other sites do.

Hope this helps and you can do some of those things, if you can manage to do it probably OpenSemanticSearch wont have much to envy Google or Bing and it could be used as a perfect replacement for those of us who want to be in control of our data and still be able to search the web, if you manage to do it I'm 100% sure I wont be using google or bing anymore as I already have a pretty good index built with OpenSemanticSearch and the only things holding me back is the UI which sometimes is a pain to use.
