I'm starting to think the real answer is to switch the minibuffer candidate collectors (for the various completion UIs) from returning completion candidates to what we've sometimes called "full candidates"......
Sure, now that grid view is dead, this is probably a better option, more Emacsy.
Oh, yes, I meant to keep the special face as well, just like dired and ibuffer, which use both a character and a face.
There is a `tabulated-list-put-tag` function that one can use for this purpose.
I guess one reason is that the "thin" lines still take up a normal height line in the terminal version of Emacs.
Also, I think it was I that proposed the lines, for `consult-yank`, and you vetoed it. 😉
