Zephyr (http://zephyrproject.org/) could be another similar RTOS option.
I think the compat API would be a useful start as it would allow people to migrate without a lot of code change
Can you explain the problem a bit more? I don't understand the problem from your sentence above.

Upstream maintenance has mostly stagnated hence why we have a series of patches downstream. I am not an upstream maintainer.

I'm glad you tested it this time. For reference we've been using this prior to it for some time on Fedora without issues with py3 etc.
