I think @p-e-w approach is correct one. I know fish, zsh, or others, are having benefits in various terms. But at the moment, most interactive terminal emulators are using bash...

I agree, from GitLab's authentication method there is no distinction between "regular" and LDAP login.
Just successfully authenticated with this [instructions](https://github.com/nlamirault/emacs-gitlab#usage) on https://gitlab.com. I don't have 2-factor authentication enabled though.
