One possibility is to support returning the original value through Err as an optional feature. This will not break backward compatibility.

I remotely remember seeing that "mlton got killed" problem before on windows, but never on Linux. Perhaps more verbosity could help show a better trace? You can modify line 242...

BTW, how big is your memory? I had no problem compiling hrc in a VM of 4GB mem.
