I've seen these kinds of cards cause issues, indeed. Might be worth checking how it works when connecting them directly.
I expect this to work unreliably as the references to the volumes might be gone when you want to (re)mount.

This is what Ejectify suppose to do. It unmounts when your display turns off, and only unmounts it when your display turns on again. This is assuming you have set...
Ejectify won't remount the drive _as long as your display is turned off_, but perhaps macOS does. You can check the Console app to check whether that's really the case....
