There is a progress bar in the latest versions but it's not very useful for tracking progress:

- Are those files being synchronized using something? - Are files outside the Sync folder also affected?

It should work fine if you also update the MediaStore DB after updating the file.

No, that is a workaround. This still needs to be fixed here.
