I can reproduce this on a Motorola and a Samsung device, definitely an app issue.

What happens when you long press on the home screen and tap "Set as default"? Please consider creating a bug report for it.

I think adding a per-contact option will be a little advanced for this app. The current solution is sufficient for most use cases.
