After a quick investigation by @malespiaut , it looks like assimp will not cut it. We need a dedicated implementation.

Please note this is NOT the same issue as https://github.com/assimp/assimp/issues/3390
It crashes on my system after saturating my RAM since I have ne swap. ON a standard swap system it would probably hang for a while
I'm using linux, no idea what Windows do here.
Do you mean you did not reproduce on linux @turol ?
